Standard 7: Instructional Planning
Title of Artifact: Lesson Plans
Date: Spring and Fall 2013
Artifact Description:
The following artifact consists of lesson plans that I created and used for each grade level that I student taught in and for each subject. For my early childhood student teaching I have included three lessons that I created based on a thematic unit for animals; bears, forest, and ocean animals. I also included lessons from my kindergarten student teaching covering reading, math, and science. The last lessons that are included are from my third grade student teaching including math, science, and social studies. All of these lessons cover each of the subject areas that I taught in each grade level while student teaching.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with standard seven of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: “the teacher organizes and plans systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.” This artifact aligns with standard seven because each of the lesson plans included are planned based on the topic, subject, individuals, the community, and the curriculum goals based on the standards. By including all of the lessons it shows that I have knowledge of all subject areas related to elementary education and will teach any grade level, upper and lower. When I was planning all of the lessons I thought about what was occurring at the schools and community so that I would be able to relate the lesson to those topics. Especially with the early childhood lessons I made sure they were based on the same topic that the other teachers were covering at the other schools since they all covered the same topic each month. For the kindergarten reading and third grade social studies I planned the lesson based on what was occurring at the school that day which was either Wisconsin Day or Parent/Teacher Conferences.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with KSD 1.a of the UWP-KSD statements which states: “The candidate displays extensive knowledge of his/her subject areas and demonstrates a continuing search for new content knowledge, resources, and best instructional practices, while understanding student diversity and student misconceptions and misunderstandings as key to the teaching process.” This artifact aligns with KSD 1.a best because it shows that I have knowledge to teach any subject areas and researched to find other activities to go with the lesson topics to keep the students attention and focus throughout the lesson. For all of the lessons I thought about and included areas where the individuals would possibly be making misconceptions and was right there ready to back up their response and redirect the individuals to the correct response for each lesson.
Secondary Alignments:
KSD 1.c: Selects Instructional Goals
KSD 1.e: Designs Coherent Instruction
KSD 1.f: Assesses Student Learning
KSD 3.b: Use Questioning and Discussion Techniques
KSD 3.c: Engages Students in Learning
KSD 3.e: Demonstrates Flexibility and Responsiveness
Reflection:
What I learned about teaching/learning:
With this artifact I learned that when teaching it is important to have all different teaching skills. Not every individual learns that same way; some are visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. Since all individuals are different it is important to have modifications in every lesson plan that accommodate for the different learning styles. Some of the modifications that I had included with the lessons were manipulatives since they can easily be modified for individuals that are at different learning levels and with different learning styles. I have learned that many manipulatives can be used in more than one way especially with the younger aged children when teaching a lesson on any topic.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I have learned a lot about myself as a prospective educator throughout my student teaching placements. Each of my placements had a variety of students will different learning styles which led me to learn that with any lesson that I taught I could not do the typical pencil and paper worksheet. Instead I planned hands-on activities that let all of the students be creative and use their own imagination.
