Standard 9: Reflection
Title of Artifact: Lesson Reflections
Date: Fall 2013
Artifact Description:
This standard consists of seven reflections from lessons that I taught during my student teaching placements in kindergarten and third grade. The lesson subjects include literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and health/safety.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with standard nine of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards which states: “the teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of his/her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning community and others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.” This artifact aligns with standard nine because it demonstrates that I am able to continually evaluate myself after teaching a lesson on any subject or topic and show that I strive to grow professionally in education. I reflected while teaching each lesson and then wrote my reflection at the end of each day which gave me the opportunity to adjust the lesson for the following day if needed. When I was teaching the science lesson for third grade I planned a jeopardy game and after the first two questions I realized that I should have given the students multiple choice answers for each question instead of having the students just telling me the correct answer to the get the points for their team in the game.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with KSD 4.a of the UWP-KSD statements which states: “The candidate makes an accurate and thoughtful reflection of his/her teaching effectiveness, is aware of specific elements of his/her teaching that contributed to successful instruction, and can offer alternative teacher action to predict the future successes of alternate approaches.” This artifact aligns with KSD 4.a best because I was making accurate reflections after any lesson that I taught during my student teaching placements. For example, I reflected that on days where the students have a field trip or an all school celebration to keep the lessons throughout those days to be related to the topic of the field trip or celebration and to have the activities fun and interesting.
Secondary Alignments:
KSD 3.e: Demonstrates Flexibility and Responsiveness
Reflection:
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that teaching consists of constantly making reflections and these reflections can be positive or negative which help the students learning experience in any grade. These reflections make it easier to make needed adjustments to lesson plans or activities to have a better outcome for the students learning experience. I learned that on any day where there is a holiday or something going on where the students will easily be excited all day long.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that as a prospective educator it is important to reflect and think about each lesson on a daily basis, what went well and what did not. This will give me the opportunity to change things that could be done differently throughout a lesson while teaching or for another lesson. It also gives the ability to make note of what went well for the lesson so that I know that when I teach the same lesson again to make sure I do that part of the lesson since it went so well with the students.
