Philosophy of Education
I found a quote by Meladee McCarty that relates to my philosophy of education, “the kids in our classroom are infinitely more significant than the subject matter we teach.” This relates to my philosophy of education because I think the students in the classroom are more important than anything else and every the curriculum should be directed toward the ability and needs of the students. In my philosophy of education I will explain what I think the purpose of education, role of the student in education, role of the teacher in education and the community, and why I decided to become a teacher. At the end I will explain which of the five educational philosophies my philosophy of education aligns best with and why.
The purpose of education is:
~ to educate students with the current subject matter
~ to prepare the students for future success in the world
~ to keep the teachers up to date with the changing curriculum
The role of the student in education is:
~ to always be ready to learn under any circumstance
~ to always follow the teachers and schools rule in and out of the classroom or school
~ to always complete the assignments the teacher gives them on a timely matter
~ to always do their best in the classroom on assignments, tests, or projects
The role of the teacher in education is:
~ to keep up to date with the changing curriculum
~ to prepare the students for their future
~ to have the students work together in small groups for discussions
~ to create her lesson plans on the abilities and levels of the students
The role of the teacher in the community is:
~ to be involved with the activities and other events happening in the community
~ to incorporate parts of the community in the lesson plans through field trips and adult mentoring
I have decided to become a teacher for these reasons:
~ to make an influence on the students lives
~ from my past experiences of having elementary teachers influence me
~ having a supportive family that are teachers and to continue the tradition
My philosophy aligns with the student-centered philosophy of progressivism in these ways:
~ the teacher is not found in front of the classroom rather walking around helping the students and discussing with them the activities they are completing
~ the curriculum is based around the experiences, interests, and abilities of the students
~ the students should be involved in the community through field trips and adult mentors
My philosophy of education is not like any other philosophy because it is my own thoughts and what I think the purpose of education, role of the student, and role of the teacher should be. It also explains the reasons why I choose to become a teacher along which one of the five educational philosophies my own philosophy of education aligns with. Overall I think that education and curriculum should be based upon the student which is why my philosophy best aligns with the student-centered philosophy of progressivism.
