Standard 10: Collaboration
Title of Artifact: Religious Education Teacher and Reading Teacher Interview
Date: September 2009 – May 2010 and Spring 2012
Artifact Description:
The following artifact consists of a newsletter, first semester schedule, and a couple worksheets for the students. I was a teacher for one of the second grade religious educations classes at Sacred Heart Church in Reedsburg, Wisconsin for the 2009-2010 school year. The class meet once a week are one full hour at night and there were 18 students in the class. A newsletter went home with each of the students every week telling the parents what will be happening the next couple of weeks and what prayers to work on with their children, the newsletter included went home with the students at the first night. The schedule states what topics would be covered in each class up until Christmas with the main focus about Reconciliation. In each class the students would have a couple worksheets to go along with a short reading that went with what will be talked about during church the following Sunday. This artifact also includes an interview that was completed with two second grade reading teachers in two different school district. The interview was completed to find out how each teacher incorporates reading into their classroom and lessons. There were different areas that the two teachers were similar and areas where the teachers were different which allowed me to reflect on what would work best in my classroom related to reading.
Alignment:
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This experience best aligns with standard ten of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure Standards with states: “The teacher fosters relationships with
school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well being.” This experience aligns with standard ten because being one of the teachers I had to create a relationship with each of the students and their parents. I also had to communicate with the other teacher who was in the same classroom and with the two teachers down the hall so that we were all teaching the students the same material. I am more confident after this experience because I had to foster relationships with the students, their parents, and the other teachers. During my experience I had to change seating charts and some lesson plan to better reflect the students and how they learn. By completing the teacher interviews I have learned that it is important to communicate with the other teachers as well as the parents of the students to have a better outcome throughout the school year with the students, other teachers, and the parents.
UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Statement Alignment:
This experience best aligns with KSD 4.c of the UWP-KSD statements which states: “The candidate is able to provide frequent, sensitive, and appropriate information to parents and students and students’ positive and negative progress within the instructional program and successfully engages families in the educational process when appropriate.” This experience aligns with KSD 4.c because as being one of the teachers I had to provide the parents with information about their child, sometimes good and bad news. I did not feel right telling the parents bad information about their child but I knew it was something I had to do as a teacher, and usually by the next week I was able to tell the parents good information. I included the parents in what the students were learning because each of the students had to have five prayer memorized by the end of the year so it was important that the parents worked with their child every week.
Secondary Alignments:
KSD 4.a: Reflects on Teaching
KSD 4.d: Contributes to the School and District
KSD 3.c: Engages Students in Learning
KSD 2.a: Creates an Environment of Respect and Rapport
Reflection:
What I learned about teaching/learning:
From this experience I learned that as a teacher it is important to create a relationship with the other teachers in the school, parents, and the students. This is because then the teacher is able to consult with the other teachers regarding the education and well-being of the students. By creating a relationship with the other teachers and parents can help make it a learning environment specifically for the students.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that in order for me to be a proficient educator in future I need to communicate and work with the other professionals in the community. It is important to communicate because then we can give pointers on how a student’s well being is and the best learning techniques for him/her. I will work hard to keep communicating with the other teachers in the school along with the parents of the students.
