Autobiography
I was born in Madison Wisconsin on February 20, 1990 and it was a usual cold blistery day. Prior to my preschool years my family moved to Reedsburg, Wisconsin, where I became involved in community activities; from Girl Scouts to playing sports and being part of the organizations allowing me to be eligible for multiple awards and scholarships. Graduation from Reedsburg Area High School in spring 2008 directed me towards UW-Baraboo/Sauk County, where I completed an Associate in Arts and Science Degree in the spring of 2010. This degree set me one step closer to completing a career goal of becoming an elementary teacher.
While in elementary school and affiliations with children a decision was made to become a teacher. Other family members teach different age levels and subjects and more about my family relatives will be mentioned later. Contact and involvement with children range from preschoolers to elementary aged students through babysitting and attending family events.
Teachers play an important role in every child’s life, and this is one of the reasons I am attracted to the profession. I am able to make an influence on student lives and would help them learn in the way that meets their needs. Not all students learn the same way so it is important to incorporate a variety of methods of teaching. The teachers in elementary school influenced me, so I would like to be an influence on other student lives.
Influenced by some family members who are the teachers of different subject matter and grade levels has influenced my decision to become a teacher. My mom was a daycare provider and preschool/early childhood teacher for twenty years. My aunt has taught early childhood special education since 1983. Four of my cousins are also teachers; two in elementary school (third and fifth grade) along with two in high school (math and technical education). Using their expertise and continuing the tradition by joining the teaching profession would fulfill my aspiration to be a teacher as well.
The teachers who influenced me in elementary school began with basic education, with teacher expertise. Encouraging the students, understanding their problems, assisting them with their assignments, and always being patient is the teacher I want to be. My lesson plans will be prepared so they are adaptable to the different learning styles of the students.
Having family members who provided me with early teaching experiences have influenced me on how I plan to teach in the future. Since I have known that I wanted to be a teacher I remember my mom telling me a quote that she remembered from her teaching career. "Children are like snowflakes, no two are like.” By remembering this quote I can plan my lessons accordingly and adapt them when needed for all students. I also remember observing teachers who would reword statements and questions for students to help understand their individual level. Working with other classmates in small groups encourages individual involvement and we are able to help each other. Also an opportunity for the teacher to observe how the small groups are working together and help if needed.
